Health System Savings

3sHealth worked with Saskatchewan health regions and the Saskatchewan Cancer Agency to implement new cost savings initiatives of $11.3 million surpassing the organization’s 2015 - 2016 target of $10 million in new savings. These savings were achieved through expanded provincial contracts, purchasing rebates, and savings from the new provincial healthcare linen service.

Other estimated savings are $34.8 million in capital savings. These are savings resulting from the fact five regional laundry facilities have closed and regions will no longer need to provide for equipment replacement, maintenance and repair for those facilities. It also includes the residual value of assets to the wind down of regional laundry operations.

This brings cumulative shared services savings to approximately $191 million since 2010, well above the target of $174 million.

Annual and cumulative savings calculations explained

3sHealth developed the savings calculation framework together with our health system partners. We report savings to the regional health authorities and Saskatchewan Cancer Agency on a monthly basis. Our internal auditor reviews the savings annually, ensuring we maintain appropriate evidence to support the amounts reported.

To provide additional assurance to our stakeholders on the savings we report, we engaged MNP to perform an external audit. MNP’s audit opinion and the statement of cumulative savings for the seven-year period ended March 31, 2017 can be accessed here:
